Many diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization services can be safely and effectively performed in cardiac catheterization laboratories in Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs). Research & Planning Consultants and Healthcare Management Associates have prepared a white paper discussing current positions of medical professional societies and Medicare on performing diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization procedures in (ASCs). The paper also discusses Medicare payment policies and the state regulatory landscape for development of cardiac catheterization laboratories in ASCs. It is intended as a resource for physicians and ASC developers considering developing an ASC-based cardiac catheterization laboratory in an existing ASC or in a new ASC.

Ron Luke, JD, PhD, is President of Research & Planning Consultants and Jim Stidham, MBA, CASC, is President of Healthcare Management Associates. Mr. Stidham has developed and managed over 60 ASCs in multiple states. Dr. Luke has several decades of experience in obtaining CON approval for cardiac catheterization laboratories and ASCs in many states. The authors have recent experience with a cardiac ASC project in Montgomery Alabama.
